Water testing is one of the most important steps in selecting treatment equipment. Without a water test, contractors and customers often rely on symptoms, assumptions, or guesswork. While symptoms can provide helpful clues, they do not always tell the full story.

A customer may say their water smells bad, stains fixtures, leaves spots, tastes strange, or looks cloudy. Those descriptions matter, but they are only the beginning. A proper water test can help identify what is actually in the water and guide the correct treatment solution.

Testing is especially important with well water. Private well water is not treated by a city before entering the home or building, and conditions can change over time. A well that tested one way years ago may not have the same water quality today. Seasonal changes, well conditions, nearby activity, or aquifer changes can affect water quality.

City water can also benefit from testing, especially when customers want to address hardness, chlorine taste, sediment, or drinking water concerns. Municipal water may meet required standards but still have qualities the customer wants to improve.

Water testing also helps contractors design the system in the correct order. Treatment equipment often needs to be arranged carefully. Sediment filtration may come before other equipment. Iron removal may be needed before a softener in some cases. UV disinfection requires clear water to work properly. Reverse osmosis may need pretreatment depending on water quality.
